What real epoxy flooring is

"Epoxy floor" gets used for everything from a can of garage paint to a professional coating system. They are not the same thing.

  • Epoxy paint and DIY kits are thin, often water-based, and rolled onto concrete that's only been cleaned or acid etched. They tend to peel where hot tires sit.
  • Professional epoxy flooring is 100% solids epoxy applied at full thickness to diamond-ground concrete, then protected with a hard top coat.

Every Coating Commander epoxy floor is the second kind.

How we install an epoxy floor

  1. Diamond grinding to a CSP 2 to 3 profile, so the epoxy bonds into the concrete instead of sitting on top
  2. Polyurea crack repair on every crack, routed and filled before any coating goes down
  3. 100% solids epoxy base at a consistent 8 to 10 mil
  4. Full flake broadcast in the blend you choose, or a metallic or quartz finish
  5. Polyaspartic top coat in two cross-direction passes. Walk on it in 8 hours, drive on it in 24.

It's one flat-rate price for the full system, with no tiered packages.

Epoxy floor finishes

  • Flake epoxy. The most popular choice for garages. It hides dirt, adds grip and comes in 20+ blends. Browse the colors.
  • Metallic epoxy. A hand-worked, high-gloss finish that looks like polished stone. More on metallic floors.
  • Quartz. A durable textured finish that works well on patios and high-traffic areas.

Where we install epoxy floors

  • Garages, from one-car to oversized three-car with a shop area
  • Basements, game rooms and home gyms. Basement floor coatings.
  • Workshops and storage areas
  • Patios and outdoor concrete

Why we top epoxy with polyaspartic

Epoxy is the best base for bonding to concrete, but it isn't UV stable. Left as the top layer, it yellows in sunlight and scuffs sooner. A polyaspartic top coat fixes both: it's UV stable, very hard, and resists oil, brake fluid, road salt and de-icers. Epoxy vs polyaspartic, explained.

Built for Kansas City concrete

Freeze-thaw winters, road salt, spring moisture and summer heat all work against a garage floor here. A properly bonded epoxy base and a UV-stable top coat are what keep a Kansas City epoxy floor from peeling, staining or fading. We install across the metro, including Overland Park, Olathe, Lee's Summit and Leawood.

Common questions

How much does epoxy flooring cost in Kansas City?

It depends on the size of the floor, the condition of the concrete, any repairs needed and the finish you choose. Coating Commander gives a flat-rate price the same day as a free on-site estimate.

Is professional epoxy flooring different from epoxy paint?

Yes. Epoxy paint and DIY kits are thin coatings over cleaned or etched concrete. Professional epoxy flooring is 100% solids epoxy at full thickness on diamond-ground concrete, protected by a hard top coat.

Is an epoxy floor slippery?

A flake epoxy floor has natural texture and grip. Smoother finishes like metallic can have texture added to the top coat.

How soon can I use my new epoxy floor?

You can walk on it after about 8 hours and drive on it after 24 hours.

What warranty comes with your epoxy floors?

Coating Commander floors come with a 15-year warranty covering adhesion, peeling and delamination on properly prepped horizontal surfaces.
